Did you know that in the heart of historic Rome there is an English museum dedicated to the Romantic poets?
The Keats-Shelley Memorial Association takes care of it.
Our primary function is to maintain and develop the Keats-Shelley Memorial House in Rome, the building in which Keats died in 1821. Situated at the foot of the Spanish Steps, it is a tourist attraction for poetry lovers from all over the world.
The Association was formed in 1903, with the support of King Edward VII, King Vittorio Emmanuele III and President 'Teddy' Roosevelt. The Museum was opened in 1909.
Apart from maintaining the Keats-Shelley Memorial House, the Association is responsible for the upkeep of the graves of Keats and Shelley in the non-Catholic Cemetery at Testaccio.
In Italy we run a continuous programme of outreach to schools and other interested groups as well as individual tourists. In England we also work to promote the awareness of Romantic poetry.
We publish an annual Review of scholarship and new writing on the Romantics. We organize and sponsor various literary awards, readings and other events, which are also supported by the Friends of the Association.
